Janet Li, head administrator at Arnold palmer hospital in
Orlando (which is affiliated with MD Anderson) spoke to Dr. E,
a pediatric hematology/oncology who works at MD anderson orlando. He
says if she is going to require a bone marrow transplant then it is
best to goto a hospital which does that, otherwise the process of
moving hospitals is a pain in the butt. If she wants to stay in hawaii
there is an adult cancer center which is affiliated with UH and is NCI
certified (which is the same as moffitt, and is very hard to get). If
shes willing to go anywhere she should goto moffitt, its consistently
ranked in the top 5, and that's where MD anderson sends their
transplant patients. They do bone marrow transplants at moffitt.
L recommends doing a trial, and if she chooses Moffitt she
will most likely be a part of a study (because its a research
hospital). Shes thinking that she will be inpatient for a 'long time'
so its best that she is near family/friends.
Big Tam is waiting to hear back from the care manager who works with
all transplant and leukemia patients in Florida hospital.
